Editor’s note: Ahead of a Friday debate between U.S. Senate candidates Michele Tafoya and Peggy Flanagan hosted by MPR News, politics editor Brian Bakst asked each to talk about how their lives helped form their politics. Here’s Flanagan. We’ll post Tafoya’s interview on Thursday.
Peggy Flanagan first hit the campaign trail at age 3.
As her aunt sought a state Senate seat, the costumed toddler passed out campaign material while she took in candy trick-or-treating in St. Louis Park. Her relative lost by 156 votes.
More than four decades later, Flanagan is the DFL Party’s nominee for an open U.S. Senate seat. It’s the latest step in a career that has taken her from school board member to state lawmaker to lieutenant governor.
