Luther Seminary announced Wednesday that its next home will be in downtown Minneapolis.
The seminary had announced last year that it was planning to sell its longtime campus in St. Paul’s St. Anthony Park neighborhood. School officials said that campus no longer served the seminary’s mission, with most students attending online. The school said selling it and moving to a new home would help sustain the seminary over the long term.
That new home will be at River Parkway Place, near Gold Medal Park in Minneapolis. Luther Seminary has signed a long-term lease to house its operations, library and worship space in that building. Student housing will be offered at Augsburg University.
“Today’s announcement represents the culmination of a tremendous amount of discernment,” Luther Seminary President Robin Steinke said in a news release. “None of the decision-making around this beloved campus — our home for more than a century — has been easy. At the same time, it’s clear that the fulfillment of our mission is calling us to a new chapter in a new space.”
Steinke said school officials reviewed dozens of potential properties over the past year.
When they visited River Parkway Place, “and saw the proximity to the river, the nearby green space and access to transit, the walkability of the neighborhood, and our new worship space, we knew we had found Luther Seminary’s next home,” Steinke said.
The new building also offers “the technological infrastructure needed to modernize the learning environment while supporting the seminary’s growing portfolio of digital ministries,” school officials said.
The seminary will move at the end of the 2026-27 academic year.
The 16-acre St. Anthony Park campus was sold last month. The seminary said the new owners plan to continue operating it as an educational institution using the existing buildings.
