“MPR News has learned that the police chief in the small southern Minnesota city of St. Peter intervened Thursday to prevent federal immigration agents from taking a local resident into detention, although the city of St. Peter denied the intervention in a statement Saturday. It’s believed to be the first time a local police department in Minnesota intervened in a federal law enforcement action since the surge in immigration enforcement began two months ago.”

Independent journalist Don Lemon was released from jail “on his own recognizance, without bail,” according to ABC News. Lemon, independent journalist Georgia Fort and seven others “are charged with conspiracy against rights of religious freedom and an attempt to injure while exercising religious freedom in the two-count indictment. … Lemon posted video to his Instagram on Jan. 18 showing protesters yelling as well as his interviews with churchgoers and protesters. Lemon said on the video, ‘We’re not part of the activists, but we’re here just reporting on them.’”

“Gregory Bovino, the controversial Border Patrol leader who helped oversee the immigration surge in Minnesota, allegedly used language offensive to the Jewish federal officials on a recent call,” reports CBS News. “The call … involved multiple federal officials who were trying to coordinate a Saturday meeting to discuss issues related to the massive deployment of federal immigration agents in the area. Bovino was told on the call that Minnesota U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen, an Orthodox Jew, could not attend that meeting because he observes the Sabbath.”

A knit red beanie-shaped cap that takes inspiration from a symbol of Nazi occupation is gaining quite a following, MPR News reports. The creators “chose the pattern based on a Norwegian hat used to protest the Nazi occupation of Norway in the 1940s. The popular headgear is called the “Melt the ICE” hat.

An article in The Hill poses a harrowing question: Is the U.S. going down the path of a civil war? “Minnesota’s standoff with the Trump administration amid its immigration crackdown in the state has made a political tinderbox of the Twin Cities, as devolving clashes between protesters and federal agents stoke fears of a bigger brewing conflict. …The fatal shooting of 37-year-old intensive care nurse Alex Pretti brought the standoff to a cliff edge — and both President Trump and the state seem to have changed course. But as the federal government goes toe-to-toe with Democratic state leaders, experts warn of a pressure cooker for civil war.”
