On Monday, a judge in St. Paul heard arguments in two lawsuits challenging the right of transgender athletes to play on teams aligned with their gender identities. The first suit was brought by Female Athletes United against Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, while the second was brought by the U.S. Department of Justice against the Minnesota Department of Education and Minnesota State High School League.

A police officer in Albert Lea has been charged with one count of willfully violating government data practice acts or rules for sharing non-public body cam footage. Jacob Lawrence Gibson shared with his wife the video of a victim being tased with their face in full view.

Monday marked the last day for the 67-year-old Pearson’s factory in St. Paul, where Salted Nut Rolls were manufactured. Saddest day for peanuts in Minnesota since Charles Schulz retired.

There’s a nip in the air, so it’s probably time to hit up the AppleHouse at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Try out North Star Apple Crisp, the winning ice cream flavor from the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences’ annual contest, or any number of other fall treats.

Data from 2022 used in a 2024 RAND study on hospital pricing shows that Mayo Clinic charged private insurers more than four times as much as Medicare for outpatient services. There’s a lot to dig into on this one, but the topline takeaway is that while health insurance providers are the most public face of issues with the healthcare system, the reality is that it’s a complex system with no one single cause for high costs.

Speaking of complex systems, Minneapolis is $33 million over budget and trying to figure out what to cut and how much to raise property taxes. The closest thing to a single cause might be police overtime, however. 

Residents renting on Nicollet Island find themselves in a fight for their homes after Twin Cities Housing Development Corporation, which manages 22 units in six historic Victorian houses on the island, listed the properties for sale on Sept. 10. The community of renters is working to collectively purchase the properties now.

And finally in your Minnesota news roundup: Much like Bigfoot, Gordon Ramsay is provoking sightings and speculation across the Twin Cities area, including most recently at Irish bar O’Donovan’s across from Target Center and First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. No word yet on whether Ramsay is simply a large, out-of-focus celebrity chef roaming the countryside.
