Native American heritage nights have become a yearly tradition at sports events in Minnesota. Saturday marks Minnesota United’s fourth Native American Heritage Night, celebrating culture through song, dance and sports-inspired artwork.

Willard Malebear is Hunkpapa Lakota and owns Iktomi Tattoo in Minneapolis. His nonprofit, Art Shelf, shares a space with the shop and holds frequent community nights centered on sober living, artistic freedom and communal connection.

As part of the Minnesota United’s 2026 Artist Collection, Jared Hanks, founder of creative agency Modern Day Me, asked Malebear to create a T-shirt and scarf design that combines Minnesota pride and culture.

Malebear’s design features the Minnesota state bird carrying sweetgrass and sage at the center, surrounded by Indigenous floral art.

“I wanted to select a floral design that kind of touched on both Lakota, Dakota and Anishinaabe culture,” Malebear said.

He said he was inspired by community resilience during Operation Metro Surge and the use of the Minnesota loon as a symbol of strength.

“I wanted to honor the presence of the loon and community during that time but also the Minnesota United logo,” Malebear said. “A lot of times when we think of a bird spirit and medicine, it’s often an eagle. So I tried to position the loon in an eagle position.”

In January, Malebear announced that he had been selected for the competitive Bush Fellowship, which financially supports entrepreneurs and community leaders while connecting them to resources to grow their passions. He said his goals through the fellowship are to keep teaching art in prisons and guide sober tattoo artists through their careers.

“As an artist, it takes off a lot of the stress of having to produce artwork for rent, but now it’s easier to produce passion projects like this one without having to think of the dollar signs,” Malebear said.

In addition to Malebear’s soccer debut, attendees can enjoy Native-led blues-rock music by Corey Medina and Brothers starting at 5 p.m. on the Great Lawn, prior to the 7:30 p.m. game against the Houston Dynamo. In section 230 across the stadium, guest chefs Lee Garman and Dominique Miles of Indigena by Owamni will serve elk and mushroom tostadas.

Only 100 to 150 T-shirts designed by Malebear are available for purchase on Saturday at the Black and Blue Team Store in Allianz Stadium. The first 5,000 attendees will receive a complimentary heritage night bracelet presented by Grand Casino.
