Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District is the only one of the state's eight House districts that is open this year, which guarantees a new face will be part of the delegation next year.
The two candidates contending for the seat are Republican state Sen. Eric Pratt of Prior Lake and former DFL state Sen. Matt Little of New Market Township.
One of them will replace U.S. Rep. Angie Craig, a Democrat who has held the seat since 2019. She chose to seek the U.S. Senate nomination this year instead of running for reelection.
Pratt works in business and banking, including for Target and U.S. Bank. In the Legislature, he is the lead Republican on the Senate Finance Committee and serves on the Capital Investment Committee. He was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and is in his fourth term.
Little is an attorney who served as a city council member and mayor of Lakeville before his term in the state Senate from 2017 to 2021. He defeated state Rep. Kaela Berg and state Sen. Matt Klein in the DFL primary for the 2nd District seat.
The district covers the southern metro suburbs, including Eagan, Burnsville, Apple Valley and Lakeville, and includes all of Scott, Le Sueur and Dakota counties
