Checking bias at the door

One of the stories I’m most proud of is one that involved someone with a viewpoint that differed greatly from mine. The reason I’m so proud of the story is because I checked my bias at the door. I afforded my subject every opportunity to present his perspective, and I presented that perspective to my audience. Tough questions were asked and answered, and the readers came away with an informed understanding of the issues.

People say journalists are unbiased, and, well, that’s not the case. But journalism in its truest form is absolutely unbiased. And now more than ever we need that accurate, unbiased journalism that nonprofit news such as MinnPost provides. Will you support us in our mission to be your trusted guide for local, state and national news of interest to Minnesotans?

Join members like Karen in Minneapolis who gave this reason for donating: “Fresh, original reporting. High journalistic standards. Darn interesting.”

P.S. The fundraising team told me that we’re already 35% of the way to our Spring Member Drive Goal. Will you make a donation to help us reach that goal by Friday?

Harry Colbert Jr. is MinnPost’s managing editor.
