Locomotive destroyed by fire along rail line in St. Paul

St. Paul fire officials say the locomotive of a freight train was destroyed after catching fire on Tuesday night.

The St. Paul Fire Department responded just before 9 p.m. to the vicinity of Warner and Childs roads, near the Mississippi River just east of downtown, on a report of a freight train locomotive fully engulfed in flames.

“The rail cars were evacuated and the rail lines shut down. Power was disconnected to the locomotive. Rail workers were on site and worked to disconnect it from the rest of the cars to pull it away,” the fire department reported in a news release.

It took fire crews more than an hour to bring the fire under control. There were no reports of injuries.

Photos from the scene show it was a CPKC locomotive.
